IBN BUTLAN

CHESSBOARDS OF HEALTH, 1533

In ancient times, music was considered salutary. In the Arab world, even then, great importance was placed on hospital stays, sick children and the treatment of mental and spiritual disorders.

Ibn Butlan places treatments for the emotions right next to his advice on music. Feelings can be positive and negative. Joy makes the lean fat, but in excess, it could be fatal. Anger can benefit the fearful and banish fever, but should disappear through moderation.

Those who are unable to sing high tones are helped by organs and pipes. Irrespective of whether you have instruments – you should jump and dance to music.
