ORTUS SANITATIS DE HERBIS ET PLANTIS

ANONYMOUS, 1497

The legend of Narcissus
The beautiful Narcissus rejected the love of a nymph, but then fell in love with his own reflection as a punishment and put an end to his life with a sword. Narcissus flowers grew where his drops of blood wet the ground.

Illustration of flowers
This legend was known in 1497, although the Narcissus plant first arrived in Europe during the so-called Oriental period (1560–1620). The artist illustrated the flowers as a likeness of the young man who had fallen in love with himself.
