INCIPIT HERBARIUM, 1481
In addition to remedies, the herbal also contains cosmetics as hygiene and beautification were traditionally included within the purview of medicine.
The Hierobulbus, which literally means "holy tuber", is interpreted as garlic, autumn crocus or grape hyacinth. Ultimately, we don't know which plant was depicted here.
The text tells us something about female cosmetics in earlier times. A paste made with the roots of the holy tuber was useful against freckles. If a woman washed her face with it, the freckles would disappear.
