JOHANN JAKOB SCHEUCHZER
COOPER-BIBLE OR PHYSICA SACRA, 4 VOLUMES, 1731-1735
The parable of the Good Samaritan tells of a wounded traveller deserted by his neighbours but helped by a stranger.
Scheuchzer uses this story to talk about wound care and explains what makes a good wound salve: Oil is to be mixed with wine. Wine cleans the wound, and it is primarily oriental wine that protects from decay and can close the small vessels. Oil soothes the edges of the wound, reduces skin tension, and is able to relieve pain in this manner.
